DOT Physicals Q & A

What is a DOT physical?

Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examinations are periodically given to people whose occupation requires them to drive a commercial motor vehicle.

A qualified medical examiner must complete a DOT physical for you to obtain your commercial driver’s license (CDL).

Why would I need a DOT physical?

The Department of Transportation requires these exams for professionals, such as truck and bus drivers, to obtain and maintain a commercial driver's license. The test is a great way to enhance public safety by ensuring that no health-related problems negatively impact your driving performance.

If you want to operate or continue operating a motor vehicle designed to carry more than 15 people, or if you’re paid to operate a motor vehicle that carries more than eight people, you’re required to have a DOT physical. If you want to transport hazardous materials or operate a motor vehicle that has a gross weight of more than 10,000 pounds, you’re also required to undergo a DOT physical.

What can I expect during my DOT physical?

A DOT physical usually takes 30-60 minutes to complete.

Typically, your DOT physical begins with a review of your medical history and a discussion of your current medications and supplements. During your physical, your Hiwet Clinic Primary Care provider might also:

  • Listen to your lungs and heart
  • Press on your abdomen to look for abnormalities
  • Perform a hernia check
  • Check your blood pressure and pulse
  • Perform further cardiovascular screening
  • Do a drug test
  • Perform a vision test, since drivers must have at least 20/40 acuity in each eye
  • Test your hearing
  • Perform a neurological exam to check your coordination and reflexes
  • Check for spinal deformities
  • Examine your throat and mouth to check for problems with swallowing or breathing

Your provider also evaluates your mental and emotional health to make sure you can safely operate a commercial vehicle without putting yourself or others at risk. Your provider might also ask you to provide a urine sample.

If your provider gives you the green light after your DOT physical, you receive a medical card or certificate that’s usually valid for two years. In some cases, your provider might issue a certificate that lasts for only three months, six months, or one year. If you don’t pass the exam, your provider won’t be able to give you a certificate.

If you have any questions or concerns, your provider is happy to help. Book your DOT physical and stay up to date with your health care. Call Hiwet Clinic Primary Care or book online today.
